Northeast Delta Dental CEO (and GSQC Chair!)Tom Raffio and long-time colleague (and former GSQC Board Member!) Barbara McLaughlin were in the process of writing a book to share the fundamental principles of Northeast Delta Dental’s sustained success and vitality when Tom heard NBA Hall of Famer and legendary Boston Celtic Dave “Big Red” Cowens speak at a conference.  He realized that Dave’s key points were in alignment with the book’s themes and a collaboration was formed.   

Each of the 11 Chapters in the book highlight a key principle of leadership based Tom’s experience and the wisdom of noted management gurus.  Chapters begin with a story from Dave’s career that reflects the principal and end with a “Big Red Factor” that summarizes the keys to success detailed in the chapter.   The results is succinct, practical, and entertaining insight into the fundamentals of a high performing organization – fundamentals that apply in sports as well as businesses of all types and sizes.

Thank you to all who participated in our 2011 Best Practices

2011 featured variety in both organizations and presentation topics, demonstrating that every size and type of organization has best practices worthy of sharing. People who attended found that everyone can gain insight from what another organization is doing – even if that organization is very different from your own. 

For example BAE Systems shared how they strive to engage an employee’s hands, head, and heart to support revolutionary innovation and improvements. New Hampshire Ball Bearings demonstrated how putting people first supports both quality and cost efficiency. Dancing Lion Chocolate and the Grappone Collision Center showed how the principles of performance excellence apply to every organization – even a micro business and a body shop. And, Boynton Middle School showed us that creating a culture of student excellence can go hand-in-hand with, and even contribute to fiscal responsibility.

We thank all of our presenters who provided wonderfully informative presentations and were willing to share with others.   We also thank everyone who made time in their busy schedules to join us and hear this outstanding information. We look forward to hearing about more best practices in 2012!

Performance Excellence for the One-Man Shop

October 17, 2011: Our thanks to Master Chocolatier and micro-businessman, Richard Tango-Lowy for an innovative and engaging presentation that enlightented us on both chocolate and Baldrige.

 Richard highlighted how he has used the Baldrige Criteria and Concepts to

  • focus his eforts utilizing an Organizational Profile rather than a business plan
  • keep the big picture in the forefront by viewing the business in terms of the Baldrige categories
  • help build relationships and extend critical resources to become "bigger than just me"
  • learn, identify critical improvements, and verify that improvements in the areas of packaging, event revenues, and customer retention are effective
  • understand what measures are critical to success and focus on those measures

"America Needs Baldrige!" Day

Please join us on Thursday, September 8th to let our New Hampshire Congressional Delegation know that

America Needs Baldrige!

There is currently no funding for the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program in the proposed 2012 budget.   The main reason for this is that the value and impact of the program is not understood.  It is unfortunately seen as an "Awards Program" and not as the ultimate resource for efficiency and high performance in all of our organizations.  If anything, we need more Baldrige to support the country in managing our fiscal challenges.  While it is reasonable to take a close look at the Program to understand if changes in how it is managed are warranted, a sudden cut in the funding will cost the country more than the approximate $10m budget.  Remember that the Baldrige Program is a public-private partnership that engages thousands of volunteers to support high performance in our schools, hospitals, government, nonprofits, and businesses.

What can each of us do?

  • go to www.congress.org
  • Enter your home zip code (and street address if requested)
  • Click on each of your elected officials to get their contact information
  • On Thursday, September 8th, between 9am and 6pm call, fax, and/or email your senators and congress member.  The best message you can provide is your personal insight to the value of Baldrige.

People, Planning, and Process: Best Practices at BAE Systems

Two years ago BAE Systems shared its robust planning process with us.  Join us for this Learning and Sharing Event to hear an update on this process as well as to learn about two other BAE System best practices:

- Applying Lean and Kaizen to Business Processes

- Engaging Employees with the EMPOWER program

When an organiztion combines planning with an engaged workforce and efficient processes, Performance Excellence happens. This is a great opportunity to learn from and  adapt tested practices to your environment in support of your own improvement and excellence goals!
