Northeast Delta Dental CEO (and GSQC Chair!)Tom Raffio and long-time colleague (and former GSQC Board Member!) Barbara McLaughlin were in the process of writing a book to share the fundamental principles of Northeast Delta Dental’s sustained success and vitality when Tom heard NBA Hall of Famer and legendary Boston Celtic Dave “Big Red” Cowens speak at a conference. He realized that Dave’s key points were in alignment with the book’s themes and a collaboration was formed.
Each of the 11 Chapters in the book highlight a key principle of leadership based Tom’s experience and the wisdom of noted management gurus. Chapters begin with a story from Dave’s career that reflects the principal and end with a “Big Red Factor” that summarizes the keys to success detailed in the chapter. 2011 featured variety in both organizations and presentation topics, demonstrating that every size and type of organization has best practices worthy of sharing. People who attended found that everyone can gain insight from what another organization is doing – even if that organization is very different from your own.
For example BAE Systems shared how they strive to engage an employee’s hands, head, and heart to support revolutionary innovation and improvements. New Hampshire Ball Bearings demonstrated how putting people first supports both quality and cost efficiency. Dancing Lion Chocolate and the Grappone Collision Center showed how the principles of performance excellence apply to every organization – even a micro business and a body shop. And, Boynton Middle School showed us that creating a culture of student excellence can go hand-in-hand with, and even contribute to fiscal responsibility.

There is currently no funding for the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program in the proposed 2012 budget. The main reason for this is that the value and impact of the program is not understood. It is unfortunately seen as an "Awards Program" and not as the ultimate resource for efficiency and high performance in all of our organizations. If anything, we need more Baldrige to support the country in managing our fiscal challenges. While it is reasonable to take a close look at the Program to understand if changes in how it is managed are warranted, a sudden cut in the funding will cost the country more than the approximate $10m budget. Remember that the Baldrige Program is a public-private partnership that engages thousands of volunteers to support high performance in our schools, hospitals, government, nonprofits, and businesses.
